Dropped voice

Echoing in a white underpass

On the beach of life

Cast ashore is star debris,

Glittering like glass

 

It’s rounded and smoothened to jadeite

By the long, lonely drift

I’m holding a piece up beside my ear

Comes a voice I have missed  

It is whisper from a planet so far

 

I bring it back to my laboratory,

Grind slowly into flour 

And put it in the clumsy machine

I hear it computing on a magical beat

Hour after hour

 

For a day

For a night

 

The heavenly fossil reminds me

Of the land where you are

I’m yearning the life there in tender light

Of a small, nameless star
